car news desk, Thar remains the favorite car of the youth due to its great looks and design. In such a situation, Thar has created a new record. Mahindra Thar is currently available in two broad trim line-ups – AX(O) and LX with two petrol and one diesel engine options. According to reports, Mahindra may introduce a new entry-level 4×4 variant that will sit below the AX(O) trim and will be available with 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines. According to reports, Mahindra & Mahindra has made more than 1 lakh units of new generation Thar in one and a half years. This SUV was introduced in the year 2020 in a new avatar.

The entry price of the popular off-roader will be cut in January 2023, when Mahindra will introduce the new RWD variant of the Thar. The upcoming entry-level 4WD variant, which is likely to be named AX AC, will skip some features. Which are currently being offered on the AX(O) trim. It can be positioned as a stripped-down off-roader. Mahindra offered the AX trim but it was discontinued as it came with side-facing bench seats which did not perform well in crash tests.

Mahindra Thar Engine Options
Thar is currently available with three engine options. The base-specification is the 118hp, 300Nm, 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and is offered with rear-wheel-drive. This is followed by a 152hp, 300Nm, 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 130hp, 300Nm, 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both these engines get the option of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. And while the diesel engine is only available in 4WD guise. The petrol gets both 4WD and RWD configurations. The upcoming AX AC trim will likely be available with the latter two engines and MT 4×4.

Currently, the Thar’s only rival in the market is the Force Gurkha but as mentioned above, it will rival the upcoming Maruti Jimny. Currently, the Thar diesel variant is priced between Rs 9.99 lakh – Rs 16.49 lakh, ex-showroom, while the petrol version is priced between Rs 13.49 lakh – 15.82 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
