auto news desk, BMW has unveiled the new generation 5 Series sedan ahead of the model going on sale in overseas markets. The new-gen model comes with both ICE hybrid and electric powertrains and will go on sale in global markets later this year. The new 5 features a futuristic design, a departure from the oversized grille design seen on older BMW models.
The BMW kidney grille looks bigger than the current model and is flanked by new angular headlamps with twin boomerang-shaped DRLs, similar to the new X1. At the bottom, the prominent lines and creases of the current model are carried over to the flush sitting door handles, which also help in keeping the design clean. At the rear, the C-pillar is neatly merged with the boot lid which also tapers towards the rear edge. The new 5 gets sleeker LED tail-lamps than the current model while the bumper is also new. The all-electric i5 model gets some distinctive styling elements such as blacked-out finish on the side skirts and lower bumper and blacked-out grille.
The 5-series has also grown with the eighth generation model measuring over 5-metres in length. BMW says that the new 5 measures 5,060 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,515 mm in height, making it 97 mm longer, 32 mm wider and 36 mm taller than before. The wheelbase has also been increased by 20 mm to 2,995 mm.
