Now, Toyota South Africa has confirmed that the Fortuner and Hilux pickups will come with hybrid powertrains. Speaking to the media, Leon Theron, Senior Executive Officer, Sales and Marketing, Toyota South Africa has confirmed that both these popular models will make their way to the global market in 2024 with mild hybrid powertrains.
Will be based on the new TNGA-F platform
The current Fortuner and Hilux lifestyle pickups are based on the IMV platform which is also used for the Innova Crysta. The next generation model will be built on a new TNGA-F platform which is used for several global models including Land Cruiser 300 and Lexus LX500d. This platform supports different body styles and multiple engine options including ICE and Hybrid. The wheelbase of this platform measures 2,850-4,180 mm in length. The company is preparing to use a single platform for all its global SUV portfolio.

Media reports have claimed that the new Toyota Fortuner will come with a new diesel engine with a mild hybrid system. It will get a 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter diesel engine with Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which can be equipped with mild hybrid technology. It is likely to get more torque along with more mileage. It will come with engine start/stop system. With the mild hybrid system, the new Fortuner saves kinetic energy during braking or at low speeds, which can be used for extra torque. The new model is likely to get more power and more torque. It is also likely to get a new 2.4L turbocharged petrol engine generating 265bhp power. It could also get a 2.4L hybrid turbo petrol engine, which is seen in some global models from Lexus and Toyota.

The new Fortuner is expected to hit the Indian market by mid-2024, before the festive season Diwali. It will be prepared locally and its cost will also be high. The company is also preparing a new 7-seater SUV based on the TNGA-C platform, which will compete with the top-end variants of the Jeep Meridian and the Mahindra XUV700. Jeep Meridian gets a 2 liter turbo diesel engine.
